Westboro Photonics Conometer 80A & 80B View Angle Photometers
The Westboro Photonics Conometer® 80 view angle photometer is an imaging photometer equipped with a wide-angle lens that performs instantaneous view angle measurements on flat panel displays up to 160° (± 80° half angle). The Conometer 80 is the ideal instrument for measuring luminance, contrast ratio and gamma of emissive displays as a function of viewing angle, at a much lower cost than competitive conoscopic (Fourier) lens systems. The Conometer 80 is offered as the model 80A that features a removable lens hood to shield the measurement from ambient illumination, while the 80B’s hood is fixed. If both luminance and colour view angle measurements are required, we offer a conoscopic lens accessory for the Westboro Photonics WP6E/ES and WP512 imaging colorimeters that offers Fourier imaging out to ± 80˚.
Measuring viewing angle performance with a heavy, Fourier lens systems normally requires 6-axis motion stages or robots to achieve sample alignment. Instead of this, the Conometer 80 alignment procedure is straightforward and assured. Weighing in at only 500g, the Conometer 80 readily integrates into any test scenario. When placed directly at the display surface, the lens hood sets the optical axis for measurement, and shields the measurement from external stray light. Tip and tilt adjustments are not required — rotation and translation remain for complete alignment.
The simple design of the Conometer 80 contains fewer optical elements, therefore comes at a much more economical price. Measure displays as small as 6mm wide with accuracy and speed. With the ability to capture a wide luminance range (0.013 to more than 200,000 cd/m²), the Conometer is ideally suited to measuring the viewing angle characteristics of backlights, black levels, edge-lit displays and much more.
The measurement working distance can be varied to accommodate the pixel pitch of different displays. For example, a test area of 21mm in diameter is enough to measure to ±80° if the Conometer 80’s lens almost touches the display glass. Laptop and tablet displays can use the integrated lens hood as a fixed standoff to measure out to ±80˚ over a 54mm spot diameter. Lower pixel density displays such as monitors and televisions are best measured at longer working distances with correspondingly larger spot sizes. Please refer to the datasheet for more details.
