Labsphere Spectral Flux Lamp Standards Overview

Labsphere’s lamp standards of total radiant spectral flux are tungsten halogen incandescent lamps that serve as exceptional artefacts for calibrating integrating sphere spectroradiometers for total spectral radiant flux responsivity from 350 to 1050nm. Lamp standards are available with either 2π or 4π calibrations to support integrating sphere measurements of forward flux or total hemispherical flux. Our spectral flux standards are an NVLAP accredited product per ISO/IEC 17025:2005.

Screening, Seasoning & Calibration

Labsphere’s standard lamps are selected for their stability and reproducibility. Each standard has been carefully screened, seasoned, and calibrated at Labsphere’s New Hampshire manufacturing facility under the guidelines recommended by the NVLAP accredited ISO 17025 practices for the highest degree of confidence. Lamps are first seasoned for 1% of their rated life and then screened for stability and repeatable performance before they are selected for calibration.

The selected lamps are then calibrated directly by substitution method to a NIST traceable spectral flux reference for a calibration result you can rely on. The calibration data provided includes the lamp’s spectral radiant flux in units of Watts per nm, reported from 350 to 1050nm, as well as other parameters such as the luminous flux in lumens and the correlated colour temperature (CCT) in Kelvin. All lamps are supplied with a calibration certificate that include a complete uncertainty analysis.

Ordering Information

Labsphere spectral flux standard lamps are available to purchase individually or in sets. The use of sets is strongly recommended by international standards to both maximise lamp life and minimise measurement uncertainties. Labsphere spectral flux standard lamps are available in three power levels – 40, 600 and 1,400 lumens. The 40 lumen lamp has bare wires, while the 600 lumen lamp has an SC bayonet base. The 1400 lumen lamp features a miniature Edison screw base. Also choose between a 4π steradian (spherical) or a 2π steradian (hemispherical) calibration.

Labsphere spectral flux standard lamps are intended for calibrating integrating sphere spectroradiometers and photometers that are used for measuring the total spectral radiant flux or luminous flux from lamps, LED, luminaires, street lights or vehicle lighting.

The calibration lamps are available to purchase individually or in sets. The use of sets is strongly recommended by international standards to both maximise lamp life and minimise measurement uncertainties. Effectively you maintain one lamp as a “gold” standard, against which the “silver” standard and in turn the “bronze” working standard are checked for consistency and to track any drift or lamp depreciation.

Labsphere spectral flux standard lamps are available in three power levels – 40, 600 and 1,400 lumens. The 40 lumen lamp is designed for calibrating small integrating sphere systems, typically those with sphere diameters of less than 25cm (10 inches). The 600 lumen lamp will be suitable for spheres with diameters between 25 and 50cm (10 or 20 inches). The 1400 lumen lamp is intended for calibrating the very largest of integrating sphere systems, typically between 1m and 3m diameter.

The 40, 600 and 1,400 lumen lamps have rated life times of 650, 600 and 2,000 hours respectively. To ensure that the lamps are not operated beyond their rated lives, the operator is strongly recommended to maintain a logbook of when each lamp is used and for how long. Operating a standard lamp beyond its rated life risks increasing the rate of lamp depreciation, and hence invalidating its calibration.

The use of a “soft ramp”, current regulated, DC power supply is highly recommended. By gradually increasing the current that you apply to the calibration lamp, you minimise the thermal shock to the filament and help maintain the lamp’s calibration over a longer period. A current regulated power supply maintains a stable lamp output – the flux emitted from an incandescent lamp varies non-linearly with the current applied.

Also choose between a 4π steradian (spherical) or a 2π steradian (hemispherical) calibration. The 4π lamps are intended for applications where the calibration lamp is to be mounted in the centre of an integrating sphere and where the device under test will also be centrally mounted. The 2π calibration lamps are designed for mounting at the wall of an integrating sphere which will be used to measure the forward (hemispheric only) flux from the device under test placed at an external port on the sphere.
