Photobiological Safety Measurements

Photobiological Safety Measurements to EN 62471

SphereOptics operates a Lighting Test Laboratory for the photobiological safety measurement of lamps, LEDs and luminaires. In placing products on the EU market, the manufacturer or distributor has a legal requirement to satisfy the essential health and safety requirements for CE marking. In the case of products including non-laser source(s) of optical radiation – whether the emission of optical radiation be the primary purpose of the product or not – the photobiological safety hazard should be evaluated in accordance with EN 62471. According to EN 62471, sources of optical radiation are classified into four risk groups subject to their potential photobiological hazard to the human eye or skin. The classification requires that a spectroradiometric measurement of the emitted light be performed.
